The technology is advancing very quickly, every day the more advance notebooks are coming in the market which offers not only the light weight to carry but also the performance and that is why notebook market is hot at the moment and it is full of variety of notebook from every brand. Gaming notebooks have become a good replacement for the people who want to play games but they also mobility so they prefer to have a gaming notebook instead of desktop. Today we are going to review a gaming notebook from Lenovo, which is Lenovo idea pad y500.
Lenovo idea pad y500 has 15.6 inches 1920x1080, LG Philips LP156WF1-TLC1, TN LED glossy display which is perfect for a gaming notebook by resolution. The display looks perfect as the black metallic outer surface is nice and it’s a good idea as well. It has almost no problem with brightness and it does well in the display tests and the color are perfect and you can’t complain in this aspect. Lenovo has install glare type display while the other manufacturers are using Anti-glare displays in their notebooks. The glare-type surface does a good job in concealing the minor deficits. There is not much room for complaint in terms of colors either. The screen comes quite close to the sRGB color spectrum. The viewing angles of Lenovo idea pad y500’s display are nice and we have no problem while watching a movie from sides as well. The screen is ready for outdoor use and we have no problem while using the notebook outside at all. Overall Lenovo idea pad y500 has nice 1080p display.
Lenovo idea pad y500 has a full size keyboard and the numpad is also available. Like in MSI's devices, the brightness and volume control are on the full-sized arrow keys. However, Lenovo halved the size of the right shift key and "0" on the number pad.We found the F row's mapping particularly nifty. The FN + F9 key combo opens Windows 8's Charm Bar, FN + F10 trigger the search function and FN + F12 prompt the installed apps. Lenovo spares the user from needless clicking and/or looking up the corresponding Windows commands. The key size of 14.5 x 14.5 millimeters is fully sufficient and remains without reproach. The key spacing is less than four millimeters. However, as promising as all that sounds, the typing feel is a bit spongy. The pressure point and stroke do not give an outstanding performance. Compared with other keyboard units, the input device does not seem particularly defined. A partly cheap-sounding typing noise and moderate stability add to that. The free-standing keys at the corners can be lifted evidently. The Lenovo idea pad y500 has decent size of touch pad and the keys are integrated in the surface and separated just by a white line on the bottom of the touchpad surface. The wobbly surface unfortunately causes the mouse cursor to slip away while tapping and the input is consequently misinterpreted. The cursor occasionally jumps around or is slowed down without reason even during normal movements. The supported gestures, such as scrolling, zooming, rotating, etc., are also not always detected reliably. Overall the touch pad need some improvements.
The speakers of are basically premium JBL speakers which are very nice with the Dolby home theater technology 4.0 the movies and the audio songs are very enjoyable. The sound is not sub-woofers but its none the less as of speakers. We found them really nice and watching a movie and doing some typing while listening the audio songs was a great experience.
The Lenovo idea pad y500 remain very cool during the idle mode and the notebook’s surface temperature was really normal. whether its increases or not but when its under load, the temperature increase and you can feel it while typing on the keyboard. The fan runs normal during the idle mode and it was audible when the stress test was started but it is not a problem as the ivy bridge CPUs produce more heat then the SandyBridge so its normal for the gaming notebooks to have a noisy fan.
The Lenovo idea pad y500 has some great connectivity features. It has AC jack, VGA, Ethernet port, HDMI, 2x USB 3.0 ports on the left side, while on the right side it has 1x USB 2.0 port, ultra bay slot, Kingston lock and 2x audio ports. It has card reader on the front. Lenovo idea pad y500 does not have optical drive and that is not good for a gaming notebook and this thing has “n/b/g” band wifi and Bluetooth 4.0 for high speed wireless connectivity. Overall the connectivity of Lenovo idea pad y500 is great but it does not have optical drive.
The ideapad y500 is a very good gaming laptop and it perform very nice in the benchmarks and its has a good design and nice looking keyboard with red rims and the speakers are best with premium JBL speakers ideapad y500 is very best for watching movie and playing songs. ideapad y500 has GTX 650m in SLI so what ever game you want to play, this notebook never lacks but the touchpad is not good and it miss the gestures regularly. Overall its a good notebook for all round performance.
