We need a notebook computer for its mobility and tasking while walking feature as well. People are now more aware about their needs and what they are gonna but from market. The main problem for anyone is how to pin point a notebook according to their needs and budget because market it full of notebooks with wide variety so it’s a bit difficult but not impossible As a gamer should also concentrate on GPU as well as CPU offered in notebooks and people who do not play high end games should concentrate on CPU as integrated graphics are enough for them. We will publish a notebook buying Guide soon. ASUS is widely known for its motherboards and gaming notebooks as they performs great and their build quality is solid as well. Today we are gonna review ASUS VivoBook S550CM.

The ASUS VivoBook S550CM has the same VivoBook design and silver + black color scheme which become common between all the Asus VivoBook notebooks. The case of ASUS VivoBook S550CM looks quite good as the brushed aluminum surface gives it typical ASUS Ultrabook looks and it give the case required strength. The lid has black brushed aluminum surface for the perfect attraction. The base unit does not have any softness and its been made with the metal as well. The people who do not like to see finger prints to be visible on the lid are gonna disappoint from Asus VivoBook S550CM as its surface easily take up the finger prints. The hinges are strong enough to handle the display and its also a good thing especially for a notebook. The usual soft areas are not problematic in the case of ASUS VivoBook S550CM so Overall ASUS VivoBook S550CM has pretty good design and solid build quality.

The ASUS VivoBook S550CM has a 15.6 inch display screen which is basically SAMSUNG TN Display panel. The surface of the display screen is glossy so reflection is gonna be a problem while working outside. The screen is of glare type and its has multi-touch feature as well. The max resolution of display screen is 1366x768 which is good but 1600x900 would be great. The display is not as good as it look in the image quality and professionals are not gonna like the display of ASUS VivoBook S550CM. The contrast ratio is also not much pleasant and the max brightness is the only pleasant thing that we found in the display. The viewing angles are also quite limited and watching movie with few friends was a bad experience for me. Although, working outdoor from front is not much difficult but reflection due to glossy surface spread the juice. The display has the touch feature which is good but not much accurately responsive as it has to be and you can easily figure it out. Overall ASUS VivoBook S550CM has poor display screen.

The ASUS VivoBook S550CM has full size keyboard with the separate numpad as well as it’s a 15.6 inch notebook. The ASUS VivoBook S550CM’s keyboard is large in size and keys are also of larger size. The surface of the keys is also quite suitable for. The keyboard is basically Chiclet style keyboard and with the perfect nice key strokes and pressure points, the keyboard of ASUS VivoBook S550CM is quite suitable for accurate fast typing. The touchpad is also of large size and has the multi-gesture feature as well as it’s a Windows 8 notebook so this is a must have feature for any Windows 8 notebook. The surface is perfect for finger gliding which helps in navigation and multi-gesture operations. The keys are not visible as it’s a Clickpad so whole surface can be used instead of keys. The touchpad done well in out navigation and multi-gesture tests. Overall ASUS VivoBook S550CM has good keyboard and touchpad.

The ASUS VivoBook S550CM has stereo speakers which are located on the bottom side which is not a ideal position for the speakers and the fear becomes truth. The bass is completely missing and the sound quality produced by the speakers is also poor. The max volume is decent but due to the position of speakers, the overall sound was not pleasant as it has to be. Overall ASUS VivoBook S550CM has poor speakers.

The ASUS VivoBook S550CM has pretty good low temperature, along the side and the surface and components temperatures were quite low during the idle working scenario and they remain quite low and in the load working scenario, the temperatures were still under the danger level and it seems true that ASUS had done good work on it. The noise of the fan in the idle mode was also low than many Ultrabook and it never completely turn off but the noise produced was very low, rarely audible. The noise was a bit audible in the load working scenario but not much distracting as normal user rarely do that kind of heavy work i.e. running BenchMarks which push the CPU and GPU till their limits. Overall ASUS VivoBook S550CM runs quieter and cool.

The ASUS VivoBook S550CM has latest Wifi module and Bluetooth 4.0 for the high speed wireless connectivity which is quite good and it has Kingston lock, 2x USB 3.0, 1x audio port and optical drive on the right side, it has 1x USB 3.0, HDMI, VGA, Ethernet port and AC-in on the left side. The ASUS VivoBook S550CM does not had card reader which is not a big problem regarding connectivity but personally, I like 2x USB 3.0 ports in my notebook instead of 1x USB 3.0 ports. Overall ASUS VivoBook S550CM has good connectivity options.

The ASUS VivoBook S550CM has a 44 watts, lithium-ion based battery of 4 cell which manage to keep the ASUS VivoBook S550CM running for about 236 minutes which is pretty decent for a notebook but it should be atleast 250+ in my opinion. We measure the battery life by running all the tasks which a normal user runs on his notebook as Microsoft Office work, Typing while listening audio songs, watching HD movie/ clips, surfing web via Wifi, Copying files from HDD to HDD and from USB flash drive etc. to get the most realistic result instead of running any battery life benchmarks. Overall ASUS VivoBook S550CM has pretty decent battery life.

The ASUS VivoBook S550CM is a good Ultrabook with a very slim and sleek aluminum case with the good solid build quality. The Asus VivoBook S550CM has good keyboard and touchpad. The temperatures were quite low both in idle and load working scenarios of ASUS VivoBook S550CM. The battery life is decent (236 minutes). The connectivity options are pretty good and ASUS includes all the necessary connectivity options and optical drive is also included. The noise of the fan was also less audible and distractive than some of the Ultrabook having dedicated GPU. The speakers are also poor. Overall ASUS VivoBook S550CM is not a bad options to make at all but the final decision is your which depends upon your need and budge but one thing is solid as rock, the display screen is not suitable for professionals and overall it shows poor results in our tests.
