There are many laptops are in the market and especially the thinner ones are the mainly sold notebooks these days which are also known as ultrabooks. In this coming winter people have wide variety to choose from here in Asia, for example all the brands had introduced many ultrabooks and they are still doing that so people have more options to choose. The ultrabooks are light weight as well as they last long so if you had a notebook which last for 6 or 7 hours easily then you don’t have to remain around the power socket but choosing the right one is not an easy job without doing proper homework before going into the market for deal. The gaming notebooks are power hungry but they perform very well and the people who likes performance and mobility + gaming will definitely go for gaming notebooks. The balance between the need and budget is not a hard thing to do these days as you can ask experts and take their opinions to make perfect decisions. Today we are going to review a notebook from Alienware, its Alienware 17.

We had recently reviewed the Alienware 18 gaming notebook which is a bigger brother of the Alienware 17. The Alienware 17 has 17.3-inch design with the total weight of about 4.2 Kg which is decent for a gaming notebook as they are not lightweight to carry around. The aluminum made lid looks really nice and the case is pretty much balance regarding build quality. The base unit is really good and no softness is present. The base unit has a metallic strip around it which also looks good. The colors of lights all over the case looks really attractive and they are customizable which means you can choose which color to illuminate at where. The Alienware 17 has enough strength so it will be a good notebook to take outside. Overall Alienware 17 has good attractive design and solid build quality.

The Alienware 17 has 17.3-inch LG Philips TN LED panel display screen which has the max resolution of about 1920 x 1080. The TN LED panel in Alienware 18 works very well and the display screen of Alienware 17 has a bit less max brightness than the display screen of the Alienware 18 bit still it is good compared to the competitors. The brightness is well balanced all over the screen which is good. The contrast ratio of the display is good and the image quality is pretty nice as well but near to the top edge, the image quality seems to be decrease, we don’t know why but it does and we recheck it by multiple tests. The viewing angles of the display are pretty decent but not as good as the viewing angles of the Alienware 18’s display screen. The display is easily viewable in outdoor conditions. Overall Alienware 17 has good display screen.

The Alienware 17 is a 17.3-inch notebook so as expected from a 17.3-inch and gaming notebook, the keyboard has separated numpad and multi-color backlight which seems very charming in the dark. The keys are large enough to type accurately and it is pretty much similar to Alienware 18. The perfect feedback and pressure points of the keys resulted in excellent performance of keyboard. The large illuminated touchpad is also a good feature of Alienware 17 and the click keys located under it were very responsive. The touchpad also shows good results regarding responsiveness in normal and multi-gesture test. Overall Alienware 17 has good keyboard and nice looking responsive touchpad.

The Alienware 17 has just stereo speakers at the front and there is no sub-woofer is available. The “Klipsch” are the real makers of the speakers of Alienware 17 which done really nice job. The speakers produce excellent loud sound and the base is lovely. The sound quality is very good and we may not hear better sound from just stereo speakers of any notebook except Alienware 17. The speakers are really nice and good for emergency use as well in outdoor condition where you can take external speakers along. Overall Alienware 17 has good speakers.

The Alienware 17 has remains really cool during our 1 hour of idle tests. The Alienware 17 has pretty good low temperatures all around it. The area above the keyboard, wrest rest and middle of it remains cool during idle working. The temperatures raised in stress tests but they still well under the danger level and using Alienware 17 on the lap while doing anything does not matters at all regarding temperature. The noise produced by the Alienware 17 was really low and we do all the normal tasks, watch HD clips, web surfing etc. and the noise was rarely audible. The noise obviously increased and it was easily audible and distracting but only in 100% load which a normal user will rarely face. i.e. running the benchmarks which take CPU and GPU to their neck but during the latest gaming i.e. crisis 3, BF3, Metro last night etc. with ultra-settings, The noise of system was ignorable. Overall Alienware 17 remain cool and quiet.

The Alienware 17 has pretty nice connectivity options available for the users. The Alienware 17 has WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 for high speed wireless connectivity. The Alienware 17 has Gigabit LAN, Blue Ray Drive, card reader and 2x USB 3.0 ports on the right side. The Alienware 17 also has Power-in, 3x audio ports, miniDisplay port, HDMI, Kingston lock port and 2x USB 3.0 ports on the left side. The Alienware 17 has noting on the front and rear. The VGA port is not available which is necessary for normal person’s notebook. Overall Alienware 17 has good connectivity options.

The Alienware 17 has 8 Cells, Lithium-ion based battery of 86 watts which manages to keep the notebook running for about 172 minutes which is pretty decent for a gaming notebook as they do not lasts longer like laptops/ ultrabooks. We do all the normal tasks as Microsoft office work with audio songs in background, surfing web via WiFi, HD video clips, running latest gaming like BF3, crisis 3 and metro last night, copying files, photo editing etc. Overall Alienware 17 has pretty decent battery life.

The Alienware 17 has latest 4th Gen. Intel Core i7 quad core CPU and Fastest Nvidia single mobile GPU. The Alienware 17 is really a nice notebook and probably, fastest single GPU notebook. The Alienware 17 has good display screen, speakers, attractive design, solid build quality, connectivity. The keyboard and touchpad, both are nice. The Alienware 17 has good connectivity options including 4x USB 3.0 ports. The battery life of Alienware 17 is also pretty decent 172 minutes as a gaming notebook. The Alienware 17 is a right choice for person who wants to buy fastest single GPU notebook, not with SLI/ Cross Fire GPU solutions so it’s a no thinking, going-in notebook. The Alienware 17 is a perfect choice to make at the moment by the way you can always contact us for more tips or if you had any kind of question about this notebook.
