The storage is something that is very important in any PC build as well as for notebooks. The Hard Disk Drives are the traditional storage devices from past two decades but things are not the same today, from past 3 or 4 years, the SSDs have not been choose as main storage because of their low storage capacity but not in 2013. There are a lot of SSDs are available today in 480GB, 510GB and even in 960GB storage capacity and I think it’s the time for SSDs to take over the game from HDD. The main advantages of Solid State Drives are 1: They are shock proofed. 2: High read/ write speeds. The gamers/ enthusiasts love the SSDs but these days, notebook owner prefer SSDs because they do not worry about carrying their notebook carefully anymore regarding Storage Disks. Today we are going to review an SSD from SanDisk which is known for their excellent reliable products and the SSD on table is SanDisk Ultra Plus 256 GB.
We have already experience the problem with the SandForce controllers and the poor reliability as OCZ Vector is one of the best example of un-reliability and therefore many brands change the controllers as SanDisk does and they goes to Marvell and the new SanDisk Ultra Plus has the marvel SS889175 controller and it is expected to be reliable as we expect from SanDisk. The separate, independent NAND channels make this SSD a topper in midlevel SSDs. The SanDisk Ultra Plus has MLC NAND flash which is not as fast as SLC NAND, we see in SanDisk Extreme II but still it is good to go with. The Samsung DDR2-800 DRAM (single) is also a good feature of SanDisk Extreme II. The SanDisk Ultra Plus can be used in desktop and laptop as well but its weight is a bit more than usual expected weight from any SSD. The SanDisk Ultra Plus perform with DRAM + nCache combination witch is not new except the name. The SSDs are fast enough with about 8GB cache as Samsung EVO 1TB so it can impact on performance and that’s for sure. Lets jump in and check out how SanDisk Ultra Plus performs…..
The SanDisk Ultra Plus is a good SSD with comparatively low price and good performance in our benchmarks. The SanDisk Ultra Plus has better controller and expected to be more reliable because of Marvell controller and MLC NAND. The SanDisk Ultra Plus has good build quality as well as improved custom firmware solution. The SanDisk Ultra Plus is placed to be at top in mid-level SSDs category and we think, it does that and really a good choice to make for the mid-level users who cannot afford high end SSDs by $200+ in 240GB/ 256GB storage capacity and that is why SanDisk Ultra Plus is a good option for those people to get same 256GB capacity in just $162 (at time of review).
